Volcano Eruption in Google Earth

EN: I put an overlayed map of the location of the new lava field caused by the recent eruption of volcano Bardarbunga. I think it's ok, I should not go in this are during my trek in the winter but hopefully the volcano itself will not explode (down left on the image) as it would melt the ice. My winter route should be more or less 70% of my summer route. (Red=lava field, today above 16km long)

FR: J'ai superposé une image de l'étendue de la lave créée lors de l'éruption du volcan Bardarbunga (Rouge=la lave qui mesure aujourd'hui plus de 16km de long). Je crois que c'est assez éloigné de mon passage futur en hiver. Mais si le volcan lui-même explose et fait fondre la glace (en bas à gauche) je serai en très mauvaise posture. Mon trajet hivernal devrait se rapprocher à 70% de mon trajet d'été.

Iceland Embassy

ENG: Today I have been to the Embassy of Iceland in Brussels. I discussed the Iceland trek expedition's goals with His Excellency Thórir Ibsen and his counselor for Education and culture. The ambassador finds the expedition very challenging and also likes the idea of linking the expedition to education. He advised me to work thoroughly on the idea of the photo exhibition I'd like to set-up, which I call "The dark side of Iceland". I was given a contact of a geologist who could be interested to help me with info about the Icelandic geology.

FRA: Aujourd'hui, j'ai rendu visite à Son excellence Thórir Ibsen, le nouvel ambassadeur d'Islande à Bruxelles. Je lui ai décrit mes idées et les buts du projet Iceland Trek. La présence du conseiller pour l'éducation et la culture m'a également permis de parler du projet éducatif et de l'expo photo "The dark side of Iceland" que je voudrais réaliser. L'ambassadeur comprend les challenges auxquels je vais me confronter et il a apprécié les projets liés à l'expédition. On m'a donné le contact d'un géologue Islandais qui pourrait être intéresser à m'aider pour la partie information sur la spécificité géologique du pays volcanique.

ENG: I now have some answer to my questions. The Iceland Met Office published 2 very interesting reports: one about the fairly warm year of 2010 in Iceland and one about the consequences of the ashes of the Eyjafjallajökull eruption. It's very interesting and you can see that I experienced big above average river floods all around the Vatnajökull. This shows my not so idiot reaction of walking onto 2 glaciers without crampons! The water discharge of the Jökulsá á Fjöllum is roughly 40% higher in July 2010 (black) compared to the previous 4 summers. And obviously was the trend for all other rivers.

RUV TV Reportage

In Reykyavik

ENG: It's LouPhi. I hitchhiked today to Reykyavik after waiting 1h30 on the ring road. I am staying at the salvation army (where I met a Belgian friend of Pierre Soete, see last years' Everest expedition). I will put photos ad add text to the previous posts early August, stay tuned. I am very skinny but will fid a scale to know how much I've lost. I will also upload the entire GPS route (700 points or so) on my main website for download. Arriving in the capital, I was already in the news (online) as someone would have followed the blog. Tomorrow I will go to RUV TV studio for giving video and interview. I expect to meet Halldor Kvaran and the pulkahut then take the plane and arrive in Paris at 6.30 am on Monday and at work at 10 in Brussels. Thanks for all comments, I will reply later.

I ate almost nothing yesterday night (100gr of chocolate left) but today my breakfast at 1pm consisted of 5 snickers + 1 foot long subway + 6inch inch subway sandwich.

I have a lot of surprises and stunning HD video and photos. Winter possible ? maybe, I'll have to try but with equipment and sponsors. No more glaciers without crampons, promised !

Just arrived !

ENG: Louis-Philippe just arrived yesterday the 30th of July 2010 at the extreme south point of Iceland after a 19 days trek.

He reached his initial objectives and will bring a lot from this expedition:
1.    He did an unsupported crossing of Iceland from the extreme North to extreme South points (highest to lowest lattitude).
2.    It is a solo trek. No vehicle to help, no fooddrops or preplaced foodcaches. He relies only on what I bring from the start.
3.    Measure himself against the extreme elements/factors: wind, snow, cold, dehydration, exhaustion, loneliness, heat, rain, hail, whiteouts, "blackouts". This in order to learn how to survive into these elements.
4.    He performs scientific research on how his body/mental will evolve during this solo trip: Stress and decision taking in extreme environments is a recent subject being studied to prepare future astronauts who will be exploring Mars and beyond (more info here)
The two last days were particularly dangerous and exhaustive with the crossing of the glacier due to bad weather conditions. He had to walk and slide very carefully on the top of the glacier and on small crests to avoid cracks. He arrived on the other side 14 hours later “happy to be alive” as he reported.

FRA: Louis-Philippe est arrive hier le 30 juillet 2010 au point le plus au sud d’Islande après un trek d’exploration de 19 jours
Il a atteint ses objectifs initiaux avec succès et va ramener beaucoup de cette expédition.
1.  Il  a réussi  une traversée sans assistance de l’Islande de l’extrême Nord à l’extrême sud.
2.  C’est un trek solo. Pas de véhicule, pas de dépose de ravitaillement ou de cache de nourriture. Il s’est reposé uniquement sur ce qu’il a pris au départ.
3.  Il s’est mesuré aux éléments les plus extêmes : vent, neige, glace, froid, déshydratation, fatigue, mélancolie, chaleur, pluie, brouillard, etc. Tout cela pour apprendre à survivre dans ces éléments.
4.  Il a accompli des tests scientifiques et des recherches sur sa physiologie et son mental pendant son parcours en solitaire : stress et prise de décision en milieu extrême sont des sujets qui sont de plus en plus étudiés pour préparer les futurs astronautes par exemple qui exploreront Mars (plus d’infos ici).

Les deux derniers jours ont été particulièrement éprouvants et dangereux avec la traversée du glacier en raison des mauvaises conditions météo. Il a du marcher et glisser très prudemment du haut du glacier et sur les crêtes pour éviter les crevasses. Il est arrivé de l’autre côté 14 heures plus tard « heureux d’être en vie » comme il dit.

NL: Louis-Philippe is aangekomen op 30 Juli 2010 in het uiterste zuid punt van Ijsland na een trektocht van 19 dagen.
Hij bereikte zijn oorspronkelijke doelstellingen en heeft veel meegenomen van deze tocht:
1. Hij heeft Ijsland van het uiterste Noorden punt tot het uiterste Zuiden punt (hoogste naar laagste lattitude) doorkruist zonder enige ondersteuning.
2. Het was een solo-tocht. Geen enkel voertuig heeft hem geholpen, geen fooddrops. Hij beroept enkel op de dingen die hij vanaf de start heeft meegenomen.
3. Heeft zichzelf getest in de meest extreme omstandigheden: wind, sneeuw, kou, uitdroging, uitputting, eenzaamheid, hitte, regen, hagel, whiteouts, "black-outs". Dit om te leren hoe men moet overleven in deze omstandigheden.
4. Hij verrichte wetenschappelijk onderzoek naar hoe wijn lichaam/mentale staat geëvolueerd is tijdens zijn solo-reis: Stress en het nemen van beslissingen die in extreme omstandigheden is een recent onderwerp dat men bestudeerd voor toekomstige astronauten die zal Mars zullen verkennen Mars (meer info hier).
De laatste twee dagen waren bijzonder gevaarlijk en uitputtend omwille van de slechte weeromstandigheden tijdens de oversteek van de gletsjer. Hij moest zeer voorzichtig wandelen naar de top van de gletsjer en op kleine toppen om ‘cracks’ te voorkomen.14 uur later kwam hij aan de ander kant van de gletsjer aan “gelukkig om nog steeds levend te zijn”.

The Longest day

ENG :  On the ice again…Louis-Philippe crossed the glacier Mýrdalsjökull (its peak reaches 1,493 m (4,898 ft)). It took him two days walking almost continuously with short sleeping break to achieve the crossing. Weather condition where very bad and progression was exhausting and probably one of the most difficult Louis-Philippe had accomplished for several years.
Note: as communications have not been very good since two days, we don’t have many details but it will come soon…

 FRA: On the ice again…Louis-Philippe est venu à bout du Mýrdalsjökull (le sommet du glacier atteint 1493 m) et cela lui a pris deux jours à marcher presque en continue avec de courtes pauses de sommeil. Les conditions météo ont été très mauvaises et la marche éprouvante. C’est d’après lui, l’une journées les plus difficiles qu’il a eu à accomplir ces dernières années.

Note : les communications ne sont pas très bonnes ces deux derniers jours. Nous avons donc peu de détails en dehors des informations essentielles. Mais cela viendra prochainement…

NL : Weer op het ijs…Louis-Philippe stak gletsjer Mýrdalsjökull (hoogtepunt bereikt 1493 m (4898 ft)) over.
Het was ongeveer twee dagen continue wandelen met korte pauzes om te slapen.
Weersomstandigheden waren zeer slecht en de vooruitgang was vermoeiend en waarschijnlijk één van de meest moeilijke die Louis Philippe verricht heeft in de voorbije jaren.
Opmerking: aangezien communicatie niet erg goed was de laatste twee dagen hebben we niet veel details, maar die zullen spoedig komen ...

Approaching the South

ENG : Focus and persevering are the two words Louis-Philippe keeps in mind every minute as he is approaching his objective. Iceland is a wonderful field for exploration and no doubt that this summer trek is a very good start for preparing the winter adventure.
Everything is all right few days before the arrival. There is still raining and the temperature is around 15°C during the day. His last position was N. 63°, 52’ 05’’ W. 18°, 56’ 07’’.

FRA : Concentré et persévérant sont les deux mots que Louis-Philippe garde à l’esprit chaque instant à l’approche de l’objectif final. L’Islande est un magnifique terrain d’exploration et cet trek d’été est une très bonne préparation pour son aventure hivernale.
Tout va bien à quelques jours de l’arrivée. Il pleut toujours beaucoup et la température est autour de 15°C pendant la journée. Sa dernière position était : N. 63°, 52’ 05’’ W. 18°, 56’ 07’’.

NL : Focus en doorzettingsvermogen zijn de twee woorden Louis-Philippe blijft herhalen elke minuut tijdens het naderen van zijn doel. IJsland is een prachtig gebied voor de exploratie en geen twijfel dat deze zomer trek een zeer goede voorbereidinging is voor zijn winter avontuur. Alles is in orde enkele dagen voor zijn aankomst. Het regent nog steeds en de temperatuur ligt rond de 15 ° C gedurende de dag. Zijn laatste positie was N. 63 °, 52 '05''WL 18 °, 56' 07''.

A rainy day

ENG : The rain took over the wind yesterday afternoon, and the forecasts are not especially encouraging for the next coming days. However his mental is higher as Louis-Philippe is approaching ocean and the extreme point at the south of the island.

FRA : La pluie a pris le dessus sur le vent hier après midi et les previsions ne sont pas spécialement encourageantes pour les jours à venir. Cependant, son mental se renforce au fur et à mesure que Louis-Philippe s’approche de l’extrême sud de l’ile.

NL: Langzaam begon het meer te regenen en de weervoorspellingen zijn niet echt bemoedigend voor de komende dagen. Louis-Philippe zijn mentale staat is beter dan ooit als hij de oceaan en het uiterste punt in het zuiden van het eiland nadert.

A windy day

ENG : Louis-Philippe reached position N. 64°, 11’ W. 18°, 21’. This day, he stopped earlier in the evening than previous days because of a powerful and continuous rain and wind. It is the first time since his the beginning he has to suffer such weather conditions.
Now he has left the glacier behind him, he progresses on a kind of rocky dust and rocks. Despite his humid equipment, he walks at a good pace.

FRA : Louis-Philippe a atteint la position N. 64°, 11’ W. 18°, 21’. Aujourd’hui il s’est arrêté plus tôt que les jours précédents en raison de fortes pluies et d’un vent assez puissant. C’est la première fois depuis son départ qu’il a à faire face à de pareilles conditions météo.
Maintenant qu’il a laissé le glacier derrière lui, il progresse sur un sol composé de poussière de roche et de cailloux. Malgré son équipement trempé, il marche à un bon rythme.

NL : Louis-Philippe bereikt positie 64 °, 11 'W. 18 °, 21'. Vandaag stopte hij eerder dan de vorige dagen door de krachtige en continue regen en wind. Het is de eerste keer sinds het begin dat hij te maken krijgt met dergelijke weersomstandigheden.
Nu heeft hij de gletsjer achter hem verlaten, hij vordert op een terrein met rotsachtig stof en stenen. Ondanks zijn vochtig apparatuur, wandelt hij aan een goed tempo.

Frozen universe

ENG : Louis-Philippe continue his progression on one of most important glacier in Europe: the Vatnajökull. Two important rivers gave him lot of difficulties and pain because of ice blocks as big as cars floating in the rivers. He evidently couldn’t cross them. So he had to walk around and it took him hours.

Nevertheless he has this exciting feeling that very few people (maybe none…) walked there…

FRA: Louis-Philippe continue sa progression sur l’un des plus grands glaciers d’’Europe: le Vatnajökull. Deux grosses rivières lui ont donné beaucoup de fil à retordre à cause des blocs de glaces aussi gros qu’une voiture qui flottaient. Il n’a bien sûr pas pu les traverser et donc il a du les contourner durant des heures.

Cependant, il a ce sentiment excitant que très peu (voire peut être personne) de gens ont marché ici

NL: Louis-Philippe zette zijn progressie voort op één van de belangrijkste gletsjer van Europa: de Vatnajökull. Twee belangrijke rivieren gaven hem veel moeilijkheden en pijn omdat er ijsblokken drijven zo groot als auto’s. Hij kon de rivieren duidelijk niet oversteken. Dus heeft hij moeten rondlopen en dat nam veel tijd in beslag.

Toch had hij een opwindende gevoel omdat heel weinig mensen (misschien geen ...) daar al gelopen hebben ...

There are no broken bones

ENG : Last Wednesday during his crossing of a lava field, Louis-Philippe fell down in a crack. He had to suffer of bruises on his right leg so immediately took rest and first basic care. When the night came, he was still wandered if he could continue the next morning.

No doubt that his strong determination helped his body to treat itself during the night. The next two days he walked at a good pace but now he has to cope with serious things: ice and water with the crossing of the Vatnajökull.



FRA : Mercredi dernier, pendant la traverse d’un champ de lave, Louis-Philippe est tombé dans une crevasse. Il a souffert de contusions sur la jambe droite. Il s’est administré immédiatement les premiers soins et a pris du repos. Le soir avant de se coucher il se demandait encore s’il pourrait continuer le lendemain matin.

Assurément sa forte détermination a aidé son corps à se régénérer durant la nuit. Les deux jours suivants il a avancé à un bon rythme mais maintenant il doit faire face à de sérieux défis : la glace et l’eau pour la traversée du Vatnajökull.

NL: Afgelopen Woensdag tijdens de overtocht van een lavaveld viel Louis-Philippe l in een spleet. Hij had kneuzingen aan zijn rechterbeen dus nam hij onmiddellijk rust en verzorgde zichzelf. ‘Snachts vroeg hij zich nog steeds af of hij de volgende ochtend kon verder gaan.

Geen twijfel dat zijn vastbesloten zijn lichaam heeft geholpen om zichzelf te behandelen tijdens de nacht. De komende twee dagen wandelende hij aan een goed tempo, maar nu heeft hij te kampen met ernstige dingen: ijs en water tijdens zijn oversteek van de Vatnajökull.

Step by step

ENG : Walking across a beautiful plain is not the daily life of Louis-Philippe, so he really appreciated yesterday morning especially when he discovered that the afternoon would be the crossing of a giant lava field. It took him almost more than 4 hours to get out of it, but he was awarded by a source (water is still a daily preoccupation) and succeed to camp around 1 a.m.
He appreciates a lot midges which are good travellers’ companions…But step by step he walk to reach his objective.

FRA: Traverse une magnifique plaine n’est pas le quotidien de Louis-Philippe ces jours ci. Du coup, il a réellement apprécié sa matinée d’hier surtout lorsqu’il a découvert que l’après midi serait consacrée à la traversée d’un immense champ de lave. Cela lui a pris plus de 4 heures pour s’en sortir mais il a été récompensé par la découverte d’une source (l’eau reste une préoccupation de tous les jours) and il a pu monter sa tente vers 1 heure du matin. Il apprécie beaucoup les midges qui sont de bons compagnons de voyage…Mais pas à pas, il marche pour atteindre son objectif.

NL : Wandelen over een mooie vlakte is niet het dagelijks leven van Louis-Philippe, hij waardeerde gisteremorgen vooral toen hij ontdekte dat hij s’middag een gigantisch lava veld zou oversteken. Het kostte hem bijna meer dan 4 uur, maar hij werd beloond door een bron (water is nog steeds een dagelijkse zorg) en is erin geslaagd om te kamperen om 1 uur.

Hij apprecieert de vele muggen, die goede reisgenoten zijn ... En stap voor stap loopt hij om zijn doel te bereiken.

Volcanos

ENG : Louis-Philippe pace is better these last few hours than few days ago. It seems that despite his wounded feet, Louis-Philippe adapt his body to his new environment. Still impressed by rocky fields and volcanos, he sometimes really has the felling of being on Mars.

FRA : Le rythme de Louis-Philippe est désormais plus rapide depuis ces dernières heures qu'il y a encore quelques jours. C'est la preuve semble-t'il que son corps s'adapte, malgré ses pieds blessés, a son nouvel environnement. Toujours impressionné par les champs de rochers et les volcans, il a parfois le sentiment de progresser sur Mars.

NL : Het tempo van Louis-Philipp is beter deze laatste paar uren dan enkele dagen geleden. Het lijkt erop dat, ondanks zijn gewonde voeten, Louis-Philippe zijn lichaam aanpast aan zijn nieuwe omgeving. Nog steeds onder de indruk van rotsachtige gebieden en vulkanen, heeft hij soms echt het gevoel op Mars te zijn.

Dettifoss

ENG: Louis-Phillipe has reached the point +65° 52’, -16°27’ just ten km before Dettifoss, one of the most powerful fall in Europe. It is lucky because, as astonishing as it could be, Louis-Philippe has to suffer of the lack of water as it hasn’t rain for few days.
The landscapes are beautiful and it strengthen his mental and willingness to continue (despite he has few delays on original schedule).

FRA : Louis-Philippe a attaint le point +65° 52’, -16°27’ à 10 km de Dettifoss, l’une des chutes d’eau les plus puissantes d’Europe. C’est heureux car, aussi étonnant que cela puisse paraître, Louis-Philippe a un peu souffert du manque d’eau ces derniers jours étant donné qu’il n’a pas plu depuis son départ. Les paysages sont magnifiques et cela renforce son mental et sa volonté de continuer (malgré le retard pris sur le planning de départ).

NL : Louis-Phillipe heeft merker +65 ° 52 ', -16 ° 27' bereikt, slechts tien kilometers voor de Dettifoss, één van de meest krachtige watervallen in Europa. Gelukkig want Louis-Philippe heeft moeten lijden door het gebrek aan water omdat het niet regerend heeft de voorbije dagen.
De landschappen zijn mooi en versterken zijn geestelijke ingesteldheid en bereidheid om te blijven doorgaan (desondanks het feit dat hij heeft een aantal vertraging heeft opgedaan).

On Odin’s track

ENG : The legend alleged Ásbyrgi gorge has been shaped by Odin's eight-legged horse when he arrived on Earth…No doubt that Louis-Philippe who has just reached the gorge yesterday would have appreciated having eight feet to cross rivers. Indeed, the streams are powerful and he had to cross a river by a bridge to avoid being frozen and taken away. It is a kind of disappointment but it is a part of expedition.

FRA : La légende rapporte que la gorge d’Ásbyrgi fut formée par le cheval à huit pates d’Odin lorsqu’il arriva sur terre. Louis-Philippe aurait certainement voulu avoir huit jambes hier pour traverser les rivières. En effet, les courants sont très puissants et il a du traverser une rivière par un pont pour éviter d’être gelé et emporté par le courant. Cela modifie un peu son itinéraire mais cela fait partie d’une expédition telle que celle-ci.


NL : De legende beweerde dat de kloof van Ásbyrgi gevormd is door het acht-benige paard van Odin toen hij aankwam op aarde ... Geen twijfel dat Louis-Philippe, die de kloof gisteren bereikt zou hebben, graag acht voeten zou hebben om de rivierern over te steken. Inderdaad, de stromen zijn krachtig en hij moest een rivier oversteken via een brug om te voorkomen dat hij bevroor en meegenomen werd. Het is een teleurstelling, maar is nu éénmaal deel van de expeditie.

Serious things start

ENG : Louis-Philippe reached yesterday 66°10’ 16°18’ about 40km south of his start point. His bag his heavy (there will be no resupply until the end of the crossing) and as the land is very rocky he has to suffer a little bit from his feet and knees. Nothing serious for the moment but he knows he has to be very cautious to reach his goal. Next step should be Ásbyrgi.


FRA : Louis-Philippe a atteint le point 66°10’ 16°18 hier, environ 40 km au sud de son point de départ. Son sac est lourd (il n’y aura pas de ravitaillement jusqu’à la fin de la traversée) et comme le terrain est très caillouteux il a un peu souffert des pieds et des genoux. Rien de sérieux pour le moment mais il sait qu’il doit être très prudent pour atteindre son but. La prochaine étape devrait être Ásbyrgi.

NL : Louis-Philippe bereikte gisteren 66°10’ 16°18, ongeveer 40 km ten zuiden van zijn startpunt. Zijn zak is zwaar (er zal geen herbevoorrading plaatvinden tot het einde) en omdat het land erg rotsachtig is lijdt hij een beetje aan zijn voeten en knieën. Voorlopig niets ernstigs, maar hij weet dat hij zeer voorzichtig moet als hij zijn doel wilt bereiken. De volgende stap zou Ásbyrgi worden.

Far North

ENG : Louis-Philippe arrived Sunday in the evening at the most extreme point of North Iceland. He is very enthusiastic, the landscapes are wonderful and adding the fact that the weather is beautiful (until next Wednesday), the expedition seems to be on a good path. He as planned to leave early on the morning just after packing the tent set up near to a strange kind of ghost house he discovered yesterday.

FRA : Louis-Philippe est arrivé dimanche soir à l’extrême point nord de l’Islande. Il est très enthousiaste, les paysages sont magnifiques et si l’on ajoute le fait que la météo devrait être au beau fixe jusqu’à mercredi, l’expédition semble bien démarrer. Il a prévu de partir tôt lundi matin juste après qu’il aura rangé sa tente qu’il a plantée à côté d’une sorte de maison fantôme.

NL : Louis-Philippe is Zondagavond aangekomen in het meest uiterste punt van Noord-Ijsland. Hij is erg enthousiast, de omgeving is prachtig en het ziet er naar uit dat het mooi weer zal zijn tot volgende week Woensdag dus de expeditie is goed begonnen. Hij zal vroeg in de morgen vertrekken nadat hij zijn tent heeft ingepakt die hij heeft opgezet in de buurt van een vreemd soort spookhuis dat hij gisteren ondekt heeft.

Passage to Mars

ENG: Next year is certainly the year where the general public will start to have some awareness about the Polar and extreme adventures to be sources of learnings to help to prepare the Mars expeditions. My Iceland Summer & Winter trek expedition is part of it as I will do cognitive tests under intense stress in extreme environment and possibly other studies on the effect of darkness while exploring new ground. I have carried out such scientific tests in my Simpson desert expedition in 2008. The Simpson is for NASA also a very good simulation terrain for Mars and Iceland as well. The forthcoming movie in 2011 "Passage to Mars (trailer)" will certainly inspire a lot of teenagers. I hope my expedition will inspire too !

FRA: L'année 2011 va certainement commencer a faire prendre conscience au public que les aventures polaires et extrêmes sont une source d'enseignements pour préparer l'exploration de la planète Mars. Mon trek-expédition en Islande été et hiver en fait partie puisque je vais effectuer des tests cognitifs pour sous stress intense en environnement extrême et probablement d'autres études sur l'effet de l'obscurité lorsque je progresserai seul sur l'île. J'avais effectué ces tests scientifiques lors de mon expédition dans le désert de Simpson en 2008. Ce désert étant un excellent terrain de simulation de Mars pour la NASA tout comme l'Islande. Le film "Passage to Mars (BA)" débarquant sur nos écrans en 2011 va certainement inspirer beaucoup de jeunes. J'espère que mon expédition aussi !

NL: Volgend jaar is zeker het jaar waarin het publiek kennis opgedaan tijdens Polar en extreme avonturen zal gebruiken om voor te bereiden op de komende Mars expedities. Mijn zomer en winter trektocht door IJsland is hievan een onderdeel omdat ik zal meedoen aan cognitieve testen onder intense stress en in een extreme omgeving. Eventueel zal ik ook meedoen metandere studies die het effect van duisternis op het verkennen van nieuw terrein zullen bestuderen. Ik heb deze wetenschappelijke testen al eerder uitgevoerd tijdens mijn Simpson woestijn expeditie in 2008. De Simpson is voor NASA, Mars en Ijsland ook een heel goed simulatie terrein. De komende film van 2011 "Passage to Mars (trailer)" zullen zeker veel tieners inspireren. Ik hoop dat mijn expeditie ze ook zal inspireren!
