Nordic Ski in the Vercors

ENG: I did 3 days Nordic Ski training in the Vercors last week. Here a small video. Apparently I had bad snow conditions according to the locals. I did not do much distance but made a lot of mistakes so learned a lot from it.

Volcano eruption

ENG: Last night a dormant volcano burst between the 6th glacier of Iceland, the Eyjafjallajökull and the 4th, the Mýrdalsjökull. For obvious safety reasons the nearby living people were evacuated. Information can be found at the Institute of Earth Sciences. No one knows how long it will last.

Science has joined in

ENG: I had a few emails today with Cécile Vallet, she's very keen again to work with me. She's developing the study research to do during this expedition. She said she could count on me to undergo a lot of tests as I was a good labrat for experiments, assiduous, serious and smiling. The smile will probably fade away in the dark cold whiteouts but that's part of the experiment. I'm really longing on what she'll come up with as I asked to take blood samples to check how my body will break up. I checked the weather in Iceland and even if I'll have an average of 2-4 hours of sun per day, with the clouds, the average amount of light reaching the ground for the entire month of January is 6 hours. OMG!

OMG!

Dixie Dansercoer

ENG: I met Dixie Dansercoer today at his home. He give me a few tips and lots a books to read so I can boost my knowledge about polar travel but of course it won't replace experience on the field. For the Simpson desert trek, I received my gear 3 days before taking the plane to Australia, the Camwheel desert cart was ready and shipped also 3 days before leaving. My physical training was not more than 40 hours. But for Iceland, I'll need more training as in the cold gear breaks faster and I won't have much water supplies like in the desert so knowing how to use a stove is capital. The Iceland trek challenge I've set is very ambitious, even the unsupported summer part will be very challenging as I planned an average of 30km walking distance per day in a not so flat country. Like always, I know it's possible, I just have to find out if I can do it. World first expeditions are hard to prepare, hard on the spot but much more rewarding as they answer more questions.

Dixie told me about his new expedition idea and asked me to think about some ideas/concept that could help. We both want a new/special/different pulka/snowsled design for our purposes, which are different but sometimes creative visions of one problem can help to emerge a brilliant idea. I exited to find ideas for my problem and his'.

Learning the cold

ENG: To prepare for the cold, I try to get my body adapt this winter to cold temperatures. That involves :
* not turning the heater on in my room during the entire winter
* I took an Ice diving course but that was more fun.
* learning ski and nordic ski.

Cameron McPherson Smith

ENG: Mid-2007, I discovered the SOLOICE expedition's site of Cameron Smith. I was impressed by Cameron's determination to cross Europe's largest glacier, the Vatnajökull as it took him 4 attempts to make it across. Also with Icelander Halldór Kvaran, he built the "Sled-hut" a new kind of pulka that allows fast setup to sleep inside of it without the need of a tent. These are the brilliant creative ideas I like to overcome problems and aiming at bagging a world first. Most of adventures on the ice involve breaking an age or speed record. In my opinion, true exploration is bringing something new in terms of concept, route, science or pioneering in a remote or not often seen area. This is exactly why I like Cameron's expeditions. I contacted him in September and he's been already providing advices. On my personal blog I made a draft based on the Sled-hut with some explanation and a design about another livable sled from a Brazilian adventurer Julio Fiadi. I call it the sleeppulka.

Route and Map

ENG: Currently here is the route I expect to take. The route should be roughly the same during summer and winter. There are still a lot of questions to be answered like where and how to cross the mighty Jökulsá á Fjöllum, probably the most powerful river of Iceland. The route can change but will start from the extreme latitudes.
